[ATTENDED: December 9, 2024] Biig Piig
Aurora has had some pretty interesting opening artists over the years. I had never heard of Biig Piig, but apparently the rest of the world has.
Her name is Jessica Smyth and she’s got an interesting backstory. She was born in Cork, Ireland, but as raised in Spain. Spanish is actually her native language. But she moved back to Ireland when she was 12 and then to London a few years later. And in 2020, her singles Switch, Don’t Turn Around and Feels Right had combined streams of over 60 million.
And so, she has some songs that have extensive raps in Spanish, which is pretty wild.
She’s got a nice variety of sounds in her pocket.
From the whispered delivery stye of 4AM and Oh No. Roses and Gold has a sultry Spanish rap.
Her recordings are kind of bedroom quality–quiet and intimate, but she was able to transform this to the stage pretty easily. Her live band consisted of a bass player who also plays keys and saxophone) and a drummer (a live drummer always helps in this situation). Her bass sounded amazing (cool of Aurora to let her hook p to the full sound system, because her set sounded great).
She was also great at getting the crowd hyped up. What’s interesting to me is that in other clips of her that I’ve seen, she’s dressed sporty/sexy. But for us she had on a sweater and longish skirt. She looked great, but she also looked quite hot (temperature).
And while her recorded songs are kind of chill, she got everyone dancing with a couple of songs that were more uptempo than the recording. Feels Right was a real banger.
She told us that she was putting out her first full album in February and played some news songs. Although I didn’t enjoy Favourite Girl as much as some of her earlier songs. But Decimal had a great beat and cool effects on top.
Picking Up started slow (and the inclusion of lyrics about Serotonin made me think of Girl n Red) but the song quickly turned into a dance number and Biig Piig was dancing all around the stage. Switch has a similar dancey section (and her moves were really fun to watch).
Her set was around 40 minutes and she kept the energy and fun up for the whole time. She was really fun.
