[ATTENDED: December 5, 2024] Hundreds of Beavers
I had seen an ad for Hundreds of Beavers and it looked weird and fantastic.
When I saw that it was playing at PhilaMOCA, I grabbed a ticket for myself and my son (my wife was bummed that she said no when I asked if she wanted a ticket, because she admitted that it sounded like fun).
So I picked up my son from school and we drove to Philly. We had pizza at a nearby shop and wow was it bad. It was made worse by the fact that when I poured grated cheese on it to make it more palatable, the grated cheese was actually sugar.
In fairness, it was in a sugar dispenser, but why is there sugar on the table at a pizza joint? Have you ever had pizza with sugar on it? It is, simply, not good.
But we were there in time for the movie and we grabbed seats in the back.
This was a special screening in which they had random prizes to give out (posters and such). We didn’t win, but that’s okay.
The movie also featured a special opening from the director in which he plugged the DVD (it was very funny).
And so was the movie!
Basically a silent movie in black and white with people dressed up in animal costumes. It sounds like it couldn’t possibly be good, but the slapstick is borderline Looney Tunes and the plot is surprisingly solid
JEAN KAYAK finds himself stranded in a surreal winter landscape with nothing but his dim wits to guide him. Against a backdrop of ruthless elements and sinister creatures – all played by actors in full-sized mascot costumes – KAYAK develops increasingly complex traps in order to win the hand of a mischievous lover.
It was great to see it with an audience and it was cool to have my son with me. We really enjoyed it and had a great night.
It is now available to stream online too!
It was directed by Mike Cheslik and written by Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews (who is the main character, Jean Kayak).
