[ATTENDED: November 21, 2024] Scene Queen
I had this great plan to arrive early to this show. And then everything went South.
My son’s college had an event that I hoped he could attend, so we wound up leaving later than I intended. And, somehow, when I bought the tickets, I didn’t realize that going to Bethlehem would be so far out of the way from his school (Philly is more or less on the way, but jeez, this drive was ridiculous.
We also didn’t have dinner, so we had a (yummy) stop in the Bethlehem Waffle House. But when we got to the Wind Creek Event Center, it was a nightmare. The traffic to get in was insane–they were directing everyone around the whole campus to the parking garage that you could enter on the way in.
I went looking for a handicapped spot and they were all full, so we had to park about as far away from the entrance as you can get. So we trudged through the cold rain to the doors only to find a massive security line and one of the most thorough checks I’ve been in a show in a long time.
When we got in the venue people were spread out all the way to the back of the room making it almost impossible to get in.
I was really annoyed by this time. So it didn’t give me a great introduction to Scene Queen.
Scene Queen is Hannah Rose Collins and she makes “bimbocore” music. It’s a mix of feminist empowering music and overly sexual empowering music. Scene Queen more or less raps (and screams) to heavy guitars.
Her sex songs are way over the top (and there were a bunch of kids at this show for the very PG Babymetal who were probably not quite ready for lyrics like

That’s the song we walked in on. Which is quite something to walk in and hear someone rapping. I did rather like twerklepit, though.
It was followed by the guitarist playing the Pink Panther riff and her rapping

The older crowd near us loved it and several of them were fans and knew the words.
I was more impressed with the lyrics of the songs we didn’t hear like the excellent 18+

And the surprisingly dark Pink Push-Up Bra

On stage, Scene Queen was a ton of fun. Engaging with the audience (she ran down and high fived everyone in the front) and having her band take a “15 minute intermission break” during the set with a pink teapot. A voice announced that they were the opening act and did not get a break. She also took the time to sign someone’s trans flag and to wish everyone a happy belated Pride Month. I was glad the audience was so supportive.
She also said that she wrote Pink Rover after a man catcalled her on the street:

Please send the coward over
And if that bastard whistles
Put a knife up to his boner
For the final song she brought out a guy (I don’t know if we were supposed to know him) to duet on “Barbie & Ken” in which Barbie murders Ken because he’s a bossy boots.
There was a lot of pink, a lot of yelling and a lot of fun.
I don’t know that I’d ever listen to her on purpose and I’m very curious how long she’ll be around, but it was a wild opening act.
