[ATTENDED: October 22, 2024] @
Every since going to Philly Music Fest a few years ago, I’ve been keeping track about it each year to see who is in it the next year. This year was pretty unexciting for me until they announced a late entry of Waxahatchee as a headliner. Since we had missed both of their shows at the Fillmore, I decided to grab us a ticket.
Opening was @ a pretty much unfindable band online.
They have a bandcamp site in which they have two releases. They are kind of interesting and experimental, with lots of sounds layered on to of straightforward lyrics.
But live, they were the least dynamic duo I’ve ever seen.
Victoria Rose sang in a kind of flat monotone. When Stone Filipczak sang along it was somewhat more intense, but only somewhat.
There were two moments that I genuinely enjoyed. Stone’s flute parts in the second song was great–the quality of the sound was amazing. But the flute parts were very short (and that was the only song that had flute). Later, Victoria made a trumpet solo using her mouth. Everyone tries to do this and as soon as she started I kind of chuckled at someone doing this live, And yet, she sounded amazing. She had incredible control and did more than just one or two notes. Her trumpet was far more expressive than her singing voice.
I noticed that some of the lyrics were interesting and as the set went on I decided that if they played something other than acoustic guitars the music could work. But as a stripped down duo, I was glad that their set was as brief as it was.
The weirdest thing is that I recorded clips of all of their songs to create a setlist, and yet despite the fact that they put out an EP earlier this year, they must have played all new songs except for these two
