[DID NOT ATTEND: April 28, 2024] Ty Segall / Sharpie Smile
I bought a ticket to this show in August. AUGUST! I’d been waiting nine months to see Ty Segall (as I’d missed him five previous times for various reasons). I didn’t really want to see him solo, and I assumed this was full band show (which it was).
But then our friends invites us over for a Passover Dinner and we couldn’t say no. I thought maybe I could squeeze in the show afterward, but damn, that’s a long dinner.
I’m about to give up on ever seeing Ty Segall. Next time he announces a local show, I’m no buying a ticket ahead of time.
Sharpie Smile is a dup who were formerly called Kamikaze Palm Tree. It’s unclear to me if they changed their name or started a new band:
Shapeshifting from Kamikaze Palm Tree to Sharpie Smile, the duo are creating a new world for themselves, merging their nostalgic melodies with their electronic side, embodying a sound which is the true essence of being “distant”. Bringing forth this new energy, they are currently working on another record— stay tuned for their latest release.
Their original band was full of absolutely bonkers songs–no real song structure, odd snippets of music here and there, random percussion and noises. Which this press release cleverly disguises:
As Kamikaze Palm Tree, the duo of Dylan Hadley and Cole Berliner make circular and psychedelic art rock, hiding clingy melodies beneath deadpan vocal delivery and experimental production. Palm Tree’s debut EP, The Hand Faces Upwards, was a drony and obscured set of songs, and the band quickly expanded their lineup for live shows.
Reviews are mixed, and I’m not sure I’d ever listen to them again, but I’ll bet a live experience would be fun.
