[DID NOT ATTEND: April 3, 2024] Adam Ant: Antmusic 2024 / The English Beat
My friend Garry got me into Adam Ant at a time when I didn’t like much beyond heavy metal.
I knew of him of course (he was all over MTV) but it wasn’t until I started to really listen to him that I found I really liked the stuff he was doing.
I’d never seen him before and really wouldn’t have gotten a ticket to this show if it wasn’t so close–Philly would have been too far for my level of commitment on this one.
When I found out my college friend Alison was going (I haven’t seen her in decades), I was pretty psyched for the evening.
Then it started raining. A lot. It rained for two days.
And, I was just getting over a cold and I was having a lot of trouble with my hip. So I really didn’t relish the idea of walking slowly in the rain for several blocks while suffering from a cold too.
So I bailed.
The setlist looks fun–I would have enjoyed the set quite a bit. But I stayed home and dry and listened to the albums instead. Sorry Alison, missed ya.
I saw The Beat (or The English Beat) or whatever they are/were called back in 2016:
Dave Wakeling sounds great–older and deeper but recognizably him. And he still has that great smile and mischievous stage banter. He’s the only original member of the band, but it’s clearly his music. It’s obvious he loves playing and engaging with the audience.
When I saw them, they played “Rude Boy Skank” and “Mirror in the Bathroom” which they didn’t this time. Not play “Mirror in the Bathroom”??!!
