[ATTENDED: March 11, 2024] Cherry Glazerr
After Ex Pilots and the obnoxious guy who was talking about how much he didn’t like Cherry Glazerr, a new guy behind me popped up who was a truly crazy fan. He said he was going to start crying as soon as singer Clementine Creevy came out. He also shouted her name and said “I love you” about six times. It wasn’t scary stalker territory but I could see how she could have been unnerved by him. He sang/screamed too loudly for a bunch of songs and then I think people got him to calm down (it’s a small venue after all).
I’d wanted to see Cherry Glazerr for a while. I could have seen them in 2019, but they played a date that I couldn’t make. Then in 2022 they were the openers for the Alt-J/Portugal the Man show that I really wanted to go to but couldn’t make. Of course, it’s always more fun to see a band like this headlining a small venue, so this show at The Foundry was perfect.
They opened with the slow, moody, “Touched You With My Chaos,” with Clementine sing/shouting “I said that I loved you” and the creepy intense fan screaming it along with her.
But he wasn’t the only one super psyched to be here. The two women in front of me bounced and screamed to each other for song after song. And a guy who pushed his way to the barrier was literally leaping three feet in the air to land with every drop in a song.
I don’t really know the band’s output all that well, but I recognized a few songs like “Told You I’d Be with the Guys” with the sharp guitar line and screamed lyrics.
I didn’t think I liked the new album quite as much as the others (it’s much more synth sounding), and yet the newer songs sounded great live. I really like the anguish in her voice as she sings “Ready for You.” Although “Bad Habit” did get pretty dancey.
There were four members on stage Tabor Allen on drums and Sami Perez on bass and a guy who was playing guitar and synth whose name I didn’t catch.
I thought that Cherry Glazerr was a fairly new band (that this was their third album) but it turns out they’ve been around (with only Creevy remaining) since 2013. The song “Haxel Princess” (whatever that means) had a great riff–I’ll have to check out this early album.
The set was a great representation of the band’s entire output. A few older songs like “Had Ten Dollaz” butted up against songs from the new album. Although at our show, at least, there were more songs from the previous album Stuffed and Ready than I Don’t Want You Anymore.
The woozy synths and sci-fi vibes worked great live and a song like “Eat You like a Pill” sounded great and the riff of “Soft Like a Flower” really shone in this setting.
Behind the band there was a fun projection that ran through a whole series of images and videos. They probably would have been a little better if the backdrop weren’t a large drapey curtain, but whatever, they were still fun to watch.
After a few new songs in a row, they spent a few minutes with Stuffed. I love the huge chorus of the creepy “Daddi,” and it was cool to be able to watch her play the intricate riff and piercing solo of “Ohio.”
After playing a couple more older songs that got the crowd really going (“White’s Not My Color This Evening” is a rager), they ended the set with “Stupid Fish” a song that has a unexpectedly unusual chord progression midway through the song. It was yet another song that had me hooked to the show.
After a brief encore (seriously, when did people start chanting “one more song?” it’s weird, especially since some bands, like Cherry Glazerr are going to give you two), they played a song from their earliest EP, “Teenage Girl,” a slow song that gets faster as it goes along.
Then she got the crowd going absolutely berserk with a crazy cover of Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings.” The crowd that was on the verge of a mosh pit erupted into a small one while everyone else was dancing around. It was a wild and insane ending to a really fun show.
