[ATTENDED: February 22, 2024] Truth Club
I used to really like White Eagle Hall. I still think it’s a great venue with fantastic sound, but the people who go to show thee have really ruined it for me.
A guy preceded me into the bathroom and was enthusiastic about the show, which was cool “Bro, are you fucking stoked?” But he brought that enthusiasm out to the floor and was shouting “rock and roll” and just being really loud (and tall). I assume he was drunk, but who knows.
Then in front of me there was a group of ten or so people who were definitely there for Indigo but who talked throughout the opening band which sucked because Truth Club was fantastic,
Any band who has a My Bloody Valentine song in their setlist is going to be interesting. I would have love to have heard their cover of “Cupid Come,” but they didn’t play it.
From North Carolina, Truth Club is a foursome who play quiet loud really well. Catchy melodies and big walls of sound meld into a great picture overall.
They played one song from their first album. It started quietly and was kind of interesting, but when they brought in the power of al four of them, it totally rocked. Singer Travis Harrington has a kind of slacker drawl which works perfectly and you can even hear the words, which is nice.
The rest of the songs were from their new album. The dynamics were greater, the intensity was fantastic and the crowd really responded.
Drummer Elise Jaffe also won over the crowd, primarily by playing the samples on Indigo de Souza’s drummer’s drum pads. They were pretty funny and were a great diversion between songs. Strangely none of the samples were used by Indigo’s band.
About half way through the set, guitarist Yvonne Chazal and bassist Kam Vann switched instruments. Chazal is listed as the bassist for their audiotree sessions, so I wonder if she normally plays bass, although she made some interesting sounds while on guitar. When Kam took over, though, he was far more of a lead guitar player, working on screaming solos and feedbacking. He even broke a string after the ninth song.
This broken string proved their undoing, though. Even though there were several other guitars on stage, none were his and I guess putting on a new string would take up most of the time they had for that last song. I’m a little surprised they didn’t just play the song without that string, but I don’t know anything about the song.
I enjoyed their set a lot and am going to be listening to their album.
