[ATTENDED: January 21, 2024] Fortune Feimster
My wife asked for tickets to see Fortune for Christmas. I was pretty delighted to see her too. I don’t know her career that well, but she was a favorite character (Dougie) on the short lived Life in Pieces.
I didn’t really know what to expect from her stand up, but I assumed it would be brash and funny.
What was really impressive is that she basically told four stories over the course of 75 minutes and each story was funnier than the next.
There’s weren’t jokes per se, there’s no real one liners, they’re just very funny stories.
The first was about her and her wife going on a honeymoon to the Maldives and her discovering mid-flight that in the Maldives being gay is a crime. Her (over)reactions to everything that people did on the island was great.
She told a number of stories about her mother. How when her parents were divorced, Fortune became her mother’s de-facto boyfriend (even though she had brothers). And they went on a number of trips together which she thought was weird but wasn’t quite sure.
It was once Fortune started dating her now wife that her mom became jealous.
There was a hilarious story about Fortune getting BISQUITS from Hardees. The set up–that her mother left the car running in their driveway because she was afraid it wouldn’t turn on again is just great in itself. But then the whole escapade of getting there with two minutes to spare, shouting BISQUITS at the machine and then having the car die while in line was very funny. To say nothing of the ravine.
A line about her mom driving over a cliff–it was bound to happen, is a great takeaway from the show.
The final story was about her mother and a graveyard. The premise being that her mother went to the grave to check on their family plot (Unresolved: someone else was being buried in it?). Her mother fell and crawled through the graveyard to get help. She told it perfectly. So very funny.
She made a little small talk banter about Red Bank. Molly Pitcher. And a funny slip up in which she said her wife drove a Nissan Sinatra. Who knew that Fortune Feimster could sing and has such a beautiful voice?
We didn’t wait in line for merch because the line was really long. Plus, the show started at 6 and we were super psyched to be heading home around 8!
By the way, we were in the front row of the balcony and HOLY SHIT were these seats tight. Not left to right, but knees! My knees were wedged against the metal guardrail. So painful! It was very hard to get comfortable and I had to apologize to my neighbor before she even sat down. So keep that in mind. had it been a King Crimson show, I may not have lasted the duration.
