[ATTENDED: November 15, 2023] Say Sue Me
I knew about Say Sue Me because they are on the Damnably label with Otoboke Beaver. I assumed they were a similarly wild punk band, but I hadn’t gotten around to listening to them.
About a week before this show, Otoboke Beaver sent a message that Say Sue Me was playing nearby. So I listened to a few songs, loved them, and grabbed a ticket.
Say Sue Me are from Busan, Korea and they sing most of their songs in English (lead singer Sumi Choi says they feel less personal and invasive to her that way).
They set up their gear (and used Party Nerves’ drums) and were ready to go after about fifteen minutes.
And as soon as they started I was so happy that I grabbed a ticket and arrived early.
I loved their bouncey sound and the delighted attitude of the whole band,
I also loved that fans were shouting in Korean to them and Sumi would answer back.
They played songs from throughout their catalog–starting with one of their new singles, “Mind is Light.”
I was a little close t the stage so couldn’t hear the vocals too clearly, but I heard the melodies of her voice just fine and the guitars and bass sounded great.
Their newest album The Last Thing Left is just a perfect encapsulation of pop music–they remind me of The Beths a bit. The poppy “We Look Alike” was followed by the super catchy “Around You.”
“One Week” is not the Barenaked Ladies song but more of a droney surf song not unlike the JAMC.
Things slowed down some for “Still Here” but picked up for “To Dream.” Then it was on to the brand new single “4Am.”
i do prefer their faster songs so “No Real Place” was great to come next.
They played a few more songs and then ended with their cover of Yo La Tengo’s “Season of the Shark.” [Their album 10 is a collection of covers].
Since KFN doesn’t really have the space for a band to do an encore properly, they stayed on the stage and said “is one more song okay.” Obviously it was, and they launched into the super catchy “Let’s Don’t Say Anything.” And then they were done.
It was an early night, but one full of great tunes. I’m so glad I got a last minute ticket.
