[ATTENDED: September 30, 2023] Suki Waterhouse
Sometime in April, my daughter asked if we could go to the All Things Go Festival. I had never heard of this Festival and assumed the answer was no. But then I saw that it was at the Merriweather Post Pavilion which is exactly three hours away from us. So when tickets went on sale, I managed to get two pre-sale tickets for Sunday. And then when they went on proper sale, I managed to score two more for Saturday.
Sunday was the far more important day for music. I mean, the whole reason she wanted to go was to see boygenius (and Lana Del Rey). But this was a great day of music to be sure.
I had vaguely heard of Suki Waterhouse. It wasn’t until she started playing that I looked her up and realized that she was an actress as well. I had seen her in Detective Pikachu, but had no recollection of her. My daughter loved the show of Daisy Jones and the Six, which is probably why she was interested in seeing Suki play.
Her music is slow-ish and she kind of slurs her vocals a bit (which must drive her acting coaches crazy), but the songs are catchy. “Moves” is super catchy. She has great stage presence and I really enjoyed her songs. She sings more loudly on “Neon Signs” and “Johanna” which leads me to think her trajectory is a little slower, more Lana Del Ray esque.
After a couple of songs my daughter realized that we needed food and a bathroom break. So we headed over to the side of the stage for both of these.
I heard her play “Fade Into You” and she sounded great singing it. I don’t know the Taylor Swift song and I think we were probably over by the screens to look at other things at the festival by the time her set was over.
But I came away from her set being quite impressed. It’s not really fair to say an actress can’t also be a singer, and its always a pleasant surprise when they can do both.
