[DID NOT ATTEND: June 13, 2023] Pierce the Veil / The Used / Don Broco / Death By Romy
My son has been into Pierce the Veil for a while. When they announced a show last year we were going to go, but they weren’t the headliners, and it seemed like a lot for just 45 minutes of music.
So here they were, possibly headlining (certainly co-headlining) this Creative Control tour with The Used.
There were literally FIVE shows that we could have gotten to for this tour.
Now that we’ve seen the show, I can with certainty say that I’m glad we didn’t go to this show at the Rooftop. Even though I do think it was cool that they had these two shows over a week apart in the same venue. That’s a neat twist on the many days in a row at the same place deal
Tonight’s was the fourth show in this run.. And the least likely for us to attend. A Tuesday night show on the Rooftop at Pier 17–did that for Pup, don’t want to do it again.
The second one was at the Skyline Stage at the Mann Center. Not a great venue to drag to on a Friday night (we would’ve certainly missed at least one band). But I already had tickets to see Pixies. I would have given those up for this show, but was happy I didn’t have to.
The third show was at the Stone Pony and that’s what we got tickets for.
The fifth show was at the Wind Creek Event Center (formerly The Sands) in Bethlehem. Of all the venues, I think this would have been the most fun. Although the sound isn’t great, I had an awesome time there for the Deftones. Although, to be honest, it might have been a rough crowd (although again, college is out by now). Oh, but this was the night of his actual graduation, so, priorities.
An embarrassment of riches.
The Used have been around since 2000 and yet I don’t know them at all. They have a ton of albums out and are part of the who emo/screamo scene. Although their more recent music seems to be less screaming and more emoting, and I hope that’s what we get in Asbury Park.
Don Broco is a band I hadn’t heard of. But Sputnik Music (usually very critical) loved their latest album and added
The hypermasculine jock presentation permeates every inch of Don Broco, to the point of making the band name a living, breathing character: the chunky guitars represent the vein-riddled biceps popping out of Don Broco’s tight Gucci shirt; the lush orchestra and energetic synths front his vanity and hedonistic lifestyle; while the lyrics represent Broco’s unhinged, obnoxious, happy-go-lucky demeanour. Indeed, back in 2018 the band caught me off guard somewhat, as I tried to ascertain whether this was being ironic or not. Thankfully, it was, but it wasn’t all that obvious at the time. Thankfully, Don Broco is fully aware of what they’re doing, and with that, Amazing Things goes all in with that motif, as they play the music straight, while subtly winking at you with their outrageous themes.
Girlfriends is a duo who play caffeinated pop-punk and are “destined to cross boundaries and inspire massive sing-alongs with energetic hooks, fury, and optimistic swagger.” (according to their label). I listened to a couple of songs and really enjoyed them, pop-punk being a sweet spot for me.
