[ATTENDED: July 28, 2019] Lucy Dacus @ Newport Folk Festival
I have seen Lucy Dacus twice and she has been really amazing both times. I was very excited to see that she would be at Newport. But I was really bummed to see that she would be running into Jeff Tweedy’s set. I had to decide who I wanted to see more, Lucy or Jeff. Since I had seen Lucy twice and more recently, I decided to pick Jeff. (It also seems more likely that Lucy will tour again before he does). That meant I could only see a few Lucy songs.
S and T came and we all sat under the big tent.
She sounded great (of course) and her band was in great form.
She opened with “Addictions,” a fantastic song. I knew there wouldn’t be much that I hadn’t heard from her before. Neverthless, I was delighted that we got to hear “La Vie en rose” which is tremendous live (and which S. liked very much).
After the first couple of songs, the photographers were told to leave and I was amused to see NPR’s Bob Boilen there. I listen to his podcast all the time and he and I have been to the same band usually one night apart (him in DC and me in Philly) and after all this time we we finally at the same show (he had a better view than me though).
Last time I saw Lucy, I was really aware of how great her band was. Jacob Blizard on guitar is fantastic, making all kinds of interesting sounds as he solos. He didn’t get to do all that much while I saw him, but I have to assume that in some of the later songs (ones I assume she played) he did some great things.
Dominic Angelella on bass and Ricardo Lagomasino on drums are a solid rhythm unit and know how to rock or to pull back when called for.
Like when she played the last song I saw. Both Jacob and Dominic sat at the side of the stage while Lucy traded in her guitar for a little teeny synth box, a “cute little piano” (a Pocket Piano mini-synth). This was for the song which is “about my mother and I” called “My Mother & I.”
I honestly can’t remember if I stayed for three or four songs and since no one has put the set list online, I don’t know if we saw “Green Eyes Red Face” or not.
I was reluctant to leave, but I really wanted to see Jeff Tweedy, so I headed out and found out that S. followed me a song or so later and enjoyed Jeff Tweedy with me (or near me anyhow).
