I Just Read About That…

[ATTENDED: March 24, 2016] Peter Pan

Every year, the fifth grade in our town puts on a play.  C. volunteered to be in the stage crew, so of course we went to see the production.

It’s funny going to see a play to watch your son who is meant to be invisible in the play.  Fortunately, there was enough light between scenes so I could see him moving furniture and carrying bongos.  He even got to held the rope to make the pirate ship at the end.

A few weeks ago, T. and I went to see a high school production.  I was curious to see how good the quality would be in fifth grade.  And I was delighted by how good the show was and how well the creators used their lack of production values to their advantage.

The high school show had been amazing–they had an orchestra pit, the had kids on wires–I was really amazed.  This production was much more bare bones.  The play was performed in the combination gym, cafeteria, auditorium–so there was no wire work, no orchestra pit, no orchestra, in fact.  Just kids who worked hard.

And the way they made the kids fly was awesome.

I know that the kids practiced for about a month and a half and I was so impressed with how well they memorized their parts and their songs.  And to give some of the kids their online due: Megan McNeil as Peter was great–she had a ton of energy and pizzazz and she sang wonderfully.  Alison Lopac as Wendy was also great–she had the most serious role and she did a great job.  Sasha Phelps made an excellent Captain Hook.  His voice was perfect for the role and he did evil very well (for such a nice boy).  Special mention must be made of Luca Ettore as Smee–his comic sidekick role was very funny. He was able to ham it up and bring a lot of laughs to the show.  I would have loved more of him.

Another really fun thing about the show for was seeing boys and girls that I know from Scouts and from coaching soccer.  It was cool seeing them up on stage acting–or sometimes just being themselves, only louder.

Great job to everyone, you even brought a tear to my eye when Wendy realized she was too old to go with Peter again.
