This magazine will self destruct
I recently realized that I had not received an issue of Geek Monthly for a while. I assumed my subscription had lapsed (it does that). But when I went to their web site, well, let’s just say don’t bother.
The folding has been confirmed by Blog Magazine. And I’m embarrassed to see that they folded in January. Really? It took me 6 months to notice? Well, even though I adored the magazine, I always took it to be more sporadic than its monthly title suggested.
I’m not entirely surprised that the magazine folded, I mean magazines are folding everywhere; however, even if the magazine itself wasn’t hugely well known, geek culture is still very popular (witness The Big Bang Theory and Kick-Ass, among recent successes) and I’m surprised it didn’t gain a wider audience.
True, a real geek is online not in print. Although perhaps not, what’s more geeky than reading a magazine about geek things? Alas, we shall all have to find out by ourselves now.
There’s a lot of grumblings on the web that people want their prorated money back. And, yes, I do too, but frankly, how much can it be? Like $20 tops? I mean, I think if the magazine folded they’re not to worried about everybody’s $20. Although if there was another magazine in the Fusion publishing arena, it would be interesting to get an issue or two of that. A look at this site, suggests that that will not happen either though. Bummer.

I saw your post while searching for the 3rd issue, because I had subscribed starting with #2, and they never sent me #3. I was upset enough that I can’t afford the $50 that #1 is selling for now to complete my collection, and now I need #3 also! And to top that, I was dropped at Sep. ’09 and never got the 2 or 3 remaining issues, even though I had paid the $40 subscription fee when I first started, then they lowered the rate to $20 like 2 months later, so yeah, a LOT of us wanted some money back. I was very annoyed that they never gave me my missing issues, despite multiple emails. They claimed to have sent the last few to me, but I never saw any of them but what they advertised on thier site! And it’s just wrong that they were still collecting yearly subscriptions up until the day they folded. Talk about customer service…
And now they have just moved overseas and are selling the very same magazine in different languages. I hope they fail over there, too!
Yea, I can’t believe how we all got screwed. I’m not sure how much I was out, but enough to be annoying anyhow. I had no idea they were opening up overseas.
I thought geeks were upposed to look out for each other.
Woah. Thanks Patrick. I see from the Geek Monthly magazine that they do still make a print edition but you can’t subscribe to it (who ever heard of that?).
