end.jpgSOUNDTRACK: THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE QUEEN-The Good, The Bad & The Queen (2007).

goodbad.jpgOnce upon a time, Damon Albarn was just the singer from Blur. This was long before he became a multi-band, genre-hopping, composing man about town. Blur were a fun, poppy band who wrote fun poppy hits and sort of bubbled under in the U.S. until they hit it big with “Song 2” or the Whoo Hoo Song, if you will. I think that “Boys and Girls” or is it “Girls and Boys” from one of their earlier albums was a minor hit here. At least that’s how I first heard of them.

During the nonsensical Blur vs Oasis war that raged all across the world (or at least the UK Music Press), I liked both bands, but was clearly more in the Blur camp. And then one day Damon met up with Jamie Hewlitt who made the great comic Tank Girl, and they formed a great comic band Gorillaz. And boy was it big; even if you don’t count that they were cartoons, they were still huge! (more…)

lostcolony.jpgSOUNDTRACK: MATTHEW SWEET-Inside (1986) & Earth (1989).

I think of Matthew Sweet as one of the quintessentially 90s musicians. He had a few pretty big hits during the 90s, and seemed to be on every compilation that came out. So, imagine what the quintessentially 90s guy sounds like in the 80s.

inside.jpgInside is so so keyboard heavy, it could be ANY synth band from the 80s. And, the keyboards are so loud in the mix that Sweet’s voice, which is not very powerful to begin with is almost totally lost. Sweet’s voice is not even that powerful on his 90s records. He has a very delightful, but very soft, voice. So, you can barely tell much about the songs, because it seems that every one has synth horns or whatnot masking what’s really happening.

earth.jpgEarth falls in line of what you think the Matthew Sweet sound is. It’s still pretty heavy on the synth, but you can see the song structures that Sweet perfected in the 90s. There’s nothing really striking on Earth, but it’s a good bridge to his 90s albums.

On both of these records it’s interesting to see who he gets to guest on them. Aimee Mann sings along with him on Inside. And Lloyd Cole joins Sweet on Earth. Sweet used to play with Lloyd Cole before going solo, so that makes sense. He was just so unknown at the time, its amazing he was able to get any collaborators.

In my Periodicals section I mentioned how Wired magazine costs me $1 an issue in its subscription. And that I would cancel it if it didn’t provide me with $1 worth of pleasure. Well, this month it did with these three items.

1) Check out http://readymech.com/ for some really, no really, cool designs that you can print out on sturdy paper and make into fantastic creatures. I can’t wait to try this out.

2) A mention of the book Um…: Slips, Stumbles and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean. Which I’m adding to my to read list.   [Update 8/9:  Stephanie’s comment below includes this web address, which I want to add to the main post…thanks Stephanie!  http://www.umthebook.com. ]

3) Buy seized property from http://www.PoliceAuctions.com. Not that I need anymore crap in my house, but I have always wanted to drive a mail truck, and as far as I know the only way to get one is through a Post Office auction. And a police auction just sounds like it would have all kinds of crazy crap available!  [Update 8/9: After going through this site, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.  Boo]

Yesterday, I engaged in a discussion about the term Torture Porn. In a recent review (see The Translation of Father Torturo below) I used the phrase and then retracted it. Torture Porn is a phrase that I’ve been reading about a lot lately with regard to a new spate of horror films. So, why do I retract the observation about the book, which was quite violent and included scenes of torture? The torture porn genre of film seems to be about pushing the envelope for what you can do in a film. This has always been true of movies, in which filmmakers must make everything bigger and better. Whether the jokes are funnier or grosser, whether the explosions are bigger and louder or whether the horror move is scarier or grosser (the other kind of gross). Torture Porn is a lazy phrase. It’s a quick way to apply a label to something complex. I admit it was lazy of me to throw out the term for the book, and there’s really no excuse for laziness, except for being lazy. When the Friday the 13th movies started multiplying, each sequel needed to outdo its predecessor with something even more disgusting (remember the 3D one that had the popping eyeball?). (more…)

torturo.jpgSOUNDTRACK: DEFTONES-Saturday Night Wrist (2006).

wrist.jpgThis is the latest Deftones release. It is a bit more atmospheric overall than the other ones. The dynamics of the record are still there, but aside from one of the more thrashier songs, they don’t seem to be as heavy, overall. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, it really showcases a catchier side to the band. It’s fun to see how well the heavier aspects can become accessible. Overall, I think the album is great, with each song having a great hook. It took a few listens for me to really get into it, but I’m now hooked.

The internet is an amazing thing.  I recently wrote a review of a short story collection.  I really didn’t like this one particular story.  A few weeks after posting it, I saw there was a referral to it.  When I checked out the referrer, it was the author of said story!  I decided to see what he had said about my review, but all he said was that he thought it would be fair to include positive and negative reviews of his work.  I found this very noble, and decided to check out the rest of his blog.  Turns out he has some other works out.  One in particular, a novel, really struck me as having a great premise.  So, I checked it out from our library and am half way done and I really like it so far.  I’m looking forward to writing about it, because I now have a soft spot for the author.  I’m not changing my short story review, but I hate being a meany, so I’m glad I’ll have a happier review for him some time next week.

onbeauty.jpgSOUNDTRACK: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE-Something About Airplanes (1999) & We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes (2000) & The Photo Album(2001) & Transatlanticism (2003) & Plans (2005).

I first heard about Death Cab for Cutie on a Believer Magazine’s free CD. The song was “Title and Registration” from Transatlanticism. At the time, I was enjoying thetrans.jpg collection, but not really planning on delving into any of the artists. And yet, this song just kept coming back to haunt me. The lyrics were great. And the melody was superb. There’s a part where the voices all sing “colli-i-i-ide” that is really just sublime. So, I bought the record and immediately fell in love with it. There’s really not a bad song on it. From the beautiful opening of “The New Year” to the ba-bah’s of “The Sound of Settling,” to the vivid description of teenagers skipping their classes and seeing how their bodies work. The whole thing made me go back and get the rest of their records. And I wasn’t disappointed.
